Reflections on a rough week

Last week was a rough one. With several members of our small but mighty team out for a variety of reasons, we were left short-handed, which put a lot of pressure on the rest of us. If just one person is off, the strain is noticeable—so you can imagine the challenges we faced with multiple absences. But my team, as always, stepped up and did an incredible job. They filled orders, made sure everything got done, and proved once again that I’m lucky to work alongside such an amazing group of people.

Even with such a fantastic team, I’ll be honest—there are still days when it’s hard to keep my head up and keep pushing forward when things don't go as planned. Last week was one of those times.

However, two things happened over the last few days that helped lift my spirits and renew my energy: I was asked to judge a pie contest on Sunday and a great conversation on the radio Monday morning with JRod and Micki on WKHM Jackson’s 105.3.

First, the pie contest. You’ve probably heard me say 1,000 times or more that I love pie—and it’s true. In my opinion, it’s the perfect food.Sunday, the pie contest took place at the Waterloo Farm Museum during their annual Pioneer Day, and it was the perfect October day for it. The sun was shining, and best of all, there was pie! I had the chance to taste incredible creations from talented home bakers—shoofly, key lime, apple, pumpkin—you name it. It reminded me why I love what I do. Pie makes everything better, and sometimes, it’s all about appreciating the process.

Then, yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of talking with JRod and Micki on the radio. We chatted about The Lakehouse Bakery, the classes we offer, our catering services, and all the ways we’re working hard to expand our reach. They sampled some of the treats I brought—JRod really loved the scones, and Micki was all about the chocolate chip croissant. As we talked, I could feel that spark of excitement reignite inside me—much like the phoenix tattoo on my left arm.

It made me reflect on all the times I’ve felt discouraged or overwhelmed, and yet found the strength to rise up and keep going. And when I think about that, I remember all of you—our loyal customers who come back again and again for your muffins, birthday cakes, pies (of course!), cookies, bread, and all the other treats we create here at your favorite local bakery.

So, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your continued support, and for reminding me why I love this work and why I opened The Lakehouse Bakery in the first place. You make the hard days worth it.
